  • 1971: Third India-Pakistan war over creation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan
1974 
  • 18 May 1974: India carries out its first nuclear tests, code named Smiling Buddha
1975 
  • 1975—1977: Indira Gandhi declares state of emergency after being found guilty of electoral malpractice. Nearly 1,000 political opponents imprisoned and programme of compulsory birth control introduced.
1976 
  • 12 Feb 1976: Commercial operation of the Idukki Power Station was commissioned
1985 
  • 1 Jan 1985: Television broadcasting in Kerala was started by the Doordarshan, the official television channel of the government of India.
1998 
  • 11 May 1998: India carries out its second nuclear tests, Pokhran-II
2000 
  • May 2000: India marks the birth of its billionth citizen
2004 
  • 26 Dec 2004: Indian Ocean Tsunami, killing about 230,000 people in eleven countries, including about 18,000 from India. The tsunami was triggered due to an earthquake of magnitude ~9.1 in the Indian Ocean, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
2008 
  • 12 Oct 2008: Sr. Alphonsa canonized as Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at Vatican. St. Alphonsa from Bharananganam, Kottayam became the second person of Indian origin (first person with both parents Indians) to be canonized as saint by the Catholic Church.
