  • 1846: Malayala Panchangam (Malayalam Almanac), first informal malayalam newspaper, was published.
1847 
  • 1847: Rajyasamacharam, considered as the first malayalam newspaper, was published by Herman Gundert.
1857 
  • 1857: India's First War of Independence, known as Indian Mutiny or the Sepoy Mutiny
1858 
  • 1858: India comes under direct rule of the British crown after failed Indian mutiny
1872 
  • 1872: The first Malayalam-English dictionary was printed and published by Herman Gundert, the renowned German missionary and Malayalam scholar
1873 
  • 1873—1924: Mahakavi Kumaran Asan. Asan's chief works are Veena Puvu, Nalini, Leela, Sri Buddha Charitham, Prarodhanam, Chinthavishtayaya Sita, Duravastha, Chandala Bhikshuki, Karuna, etc.
1878 
  • 1878—1958: Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon. His outstanding works are Badhira Vilapam, Bandhanasthanaya Anirudhan, Oru Katha, Sishyanum Makanum, Magdalana Mariyam, Kochu Sita, Achanum Makalum, Sahitya Manjari, etc. He also translated Valmiki Ramayana and Rig Veda into Malayalam. Vallathol's efforts resulted in the revival of the art of Kathakali.
1879 
  • 1879—1949: Mahakavi Ullur S. Parameswara Iyer. Ullur's works include Umakeralam, Karna bhushanam, Pingala, Premasangitam, Kerala Sahitya Charitram, etc.
1885 
  • 1885: Indian National Congress founded as a forum for emerging nationalist feeling
10 1887 
  • 1887: The earliest Malayalam novel, Kundalatha, written by T. M. Appu Nedungadi was published
  • 15 Apr 1887: Nasrani Deepika (currently Deepika), started as a fortnightly malayalam newspaper at Mannanam, Kottayam. It became a daily newspaper on 3 January, 1927.
11 1889 
  • 1889: Indulekha, the first malayalam novel par excellence by O. Chandu Menon, was published.
12 1890 
  • 22 Mar 1890: Malayala Manorama was started from Kottayam by Kandathil Varghese Mappillai as a weekly malayalam newspaper. This became a daily in 1928.
13 1910 
  • 19 Aug 1910—28 Jul 1946: Saint Alphonsa Muttathupadathu
