  • 1758: Marthanda Varma, Maharaja of Travancore from 1729-1758, passes away
1770 
  • 1770: Kunjan Nambiar passes away. He was a people's poet par excellence, immortalised himself by his Tullal songs. The songs were written in simple language, distinguished by the social satire and fine sense of humor it contained.
1773 
  • 1773: Mysore King Hyder Ali defeats Saamoothiri (Zamorin) of Kochi.
1788 
  • 1788: Mysore King Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali, attacks Kozhikode
1791 
  • 1791: Cochin became a princely state of British India, maintaining local autonomy in return for a fixed annual tribute to the British
1795 
  • 1795: Travancore became a princely state of British India, maintaining local autonomy in return for a fixed annual tribute to the British
1816 
  • 1816: C.M.S. College, Kottayam, the first college of India was established by the Church Missionary Society, England. Rev. Benjamin Bailey was the first principal of The College, COTTYM, as it was then called and spelt.

  • 1818: British control over most of India
1821 
  • 1821: Benjamin Bailey, a Jesuit priest, designed the first Malayalam metal types for the printing machine and started the first printing press in Kerala. From the basic 56 characters, he forged around 600 conjuncts in beautiful metal type. These letters adopted by Benjamin Bailey were in use for hundreds of years in Malayalam script until later when Herman Gundert designed and added several conjuncts.

  • 1841: The first complete Malayalam Bible was printed by Benjamin Bailey at Kottayam
11 1846 
  • 1846: Malayala Panchangam (Malayalam Almanac), first informal malayalam newspaper, was published.
12 1847 
  • 1847: Rajyasamacharam, considered as the first malayalam newspaper, was published by Herman Gundert.
13 1857 
  • 1857: India's First War of Independence, known as Indian Mutiny or the Sepoy Mutiny
14 1858 
  • 1858: India comes under direct rule of the British crown after failed Indian mutiny
