  • 1872: The first Malayalam-English dictionary was printed and published by Herman Gundert, the renowned German missionary and Malayalam scholar
1873 
  • 1873—1924: Mahakavi Kumaran Asan. Asan's chief works are Veena Puvu, Nalini, Leela, Sri Buddha Charitham, Prarodhanam, Chinthavishtayaya Sita, Duravastha, Chandala Bhikshuki, Karuna, etc.
1878 
  • 1878—1958: Mahakavi Vallathol Narayana Menon. His outstanding works are Badhira Vilapam, Bandhanasthanaya Anirudhan, Oru Katha, Sishyanum Makanum, Magdalana Mariyam, Kochu Sita, Achanum Makalum, Sahitya Manjari, etc. He also translated Valmiki Ramayana and Rig Veda into Malayalam. Vallathol's efforts resulted in the revival of the art of Kathakali.
1879 
  • 1879—1949: Mahakavi Ullur S. Parameswara Iyer. Ullur's works include Umakeralam, Karna bhushanam, Pingala, Premasangitam, Kerala Sahitya Charitram, etc.
1885 
  • 1885: Indian National Congress founded as a forum for emerging nationalist feeling
1887 
  • 1887: The earliest Malayalam novel, Kundalatha, written by T. M. Appu Nedungadi was published
  • 15 Apr 1887: Nasrani Deepika (currently Deepika), started as a fortnightly malayalam newspaper at Mannanam, Kottayam. It became a daily newspaper on 3 January, 1927.
1889 
  • 1889: Indulekha, the first malayalam novel par excellence by O. Chandu Menon, was published.
1890 
  • 22 Mar 1890: Malayala Manorama was started from Kottayam by Kandathil Varghese Mappillai as a weekly malayalam newspaper. This became a daily in 1928.

  • 19 Aug 1910—28 Jul 1946: Saint Alphonsa Muttathupadathu

  • 1914—1918: World War I
11 1921 
  • 1921: Malabar Rebellion or Mappila Lahala, British-Muslim and Hindu-Muslim conflict in Kerala
12 1924 
  • 1924—1925: Vaikom Satyagraha, aimed at securing freedom of movement for all sections of society through the public roads leading to the Sri Mahadevar Temple at Vaikom. It was the first systematically organized agitation in Kerala against orthodoxy to secure the rights of the depressed classes.
13 1928 
  • 1928: The first Malayalam movie, titled 'Vigathakumaran' was released. It was a silent movie, produced and directed by a businessman, J. C. Daniel.
  • 20 Sep 1928: Sree Narayana Guru passes away
14 1934 
  • 1934: Radio transmission started in Kerala at Thiruvananthapuram. The second transmitter was installed in Calicut in 1950.
15 1935 
  • 1935—1936: First attempt towards generation of Electricity on a commercial scale, using thermal power plants, by Cochin State Power and Light Corporation for electrification of the towns of Ernakulam, Thrissur and the suburbs.
16 1936 
  • 1936: Temple Entry Proclamation issued by Maharaja Shri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma and his Dewan Sir C. P. Ramaswami Iyer in 1936 abolished the ban on low-caste people or avarnas from entering Hindu Temples in the state of Travancore
17 1938 
  • 1938: The first Malayalam movie with audio, titled 'Balan', was released
18 1939 
  • 1939—1945: World War II
19 1942 
  • 1942: Quit India movement, a civil disobedience movement launched in response to Mohandas Gandhi's call for immediate independence from the British
  • 1942: The Pallivasal hydroelectric project of Travancore, commissioned in 1939 utilising the waters of Mudirampuzha river, the important tributary of Periyar is the first power station of the State with an installation capacity of 13500 K.W. Supply began in 1942.
20 1945 
  • 6 Aug 1945: United States dropped atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan
21 1946 
  • Oct 1946: Punnapra-Vayalar revolt, partly as a social and economic revolt against landlords and partly attributed as a reaction to the constitutional scheme proposed by the Travancore Dewan, C. P. Ramaswamy Iyer, early in January, 1946.
22 1947 
  • 15 Aug 1947: India gained independence
23 1949 
  • 1 Jul 1949: Travancore and Cochin were merged to form Travancore-Cochin
24 1950 
  • 25 Jul 1950: Formation of Pala Diocese, Kottayam. Though the diocese is young, some of its churches trace their origin to the earlier centuries.
